Vegetarianism and Health: An Amicable Relationship<br>The word epicurean means one who loves to eat. It comes from the ancient philosopher<br>Epicurus, who believed in deriving pleasure from food rather than just sustaining oneself with it. However, Epicurus did not believe in gluttony and short term enjoyment that would cause suffering in the long term. That is why, unbeknownst to many today, the term epicurean actually originated from an influential vegetarian. Vegetarianism within the past century has gained public credibility as a healthy diet. Well known physicist Albert Einstein even went so far as to say that it would be an evolutionary step for mankind (Dupler). However, equally strong has been the movement towards a heavily meatladen culture in the United States. Research of the relationship between vegetarianism health trends shows that this approach is not putting the best foot forward in regard toward public health. Despite contentious viewpoints suggesting possible nutrient deficiencies, vegetarianism provides for a diet that is considerably healthier than an omnivorous diet. In this paper I will address the pervasive effects that plantbased diets have on nutritional health. Firstly, many of these implied “deficiencies” are not supported by current data trends but are passed off as common knowledge. Furthermore, vegetarianism has been found to have very significant effects on heart health, among others. Lastly, the lifespan of vegetarians differs greatly from nonvegetarians for many underlying reasons. Vegetarian diets promote a more robust and physically fit body and longer lifespan.
